Drums at Greenpoint

Some of you may wonder what those strange looking objects are at Greenpoint Lighthouse! Would you believe it is drums? They are part of the way finding strategy.

Simply put, outdoor drums are installed in public places so they can be played recreationally.  They also can be integrated into performances.

As stated by the late, great, master African drummer, Babatunde Olatunji, who popularized community/recreational drumming in the US, “Drumming is the simplest thing we can do to bring us together.”  Percussion instruments are arguably the oldest musical instruments and for thousands of years people have been using them in celebrations of life, e.g. festivals, weddings, new births, harvests, victory celebrations, etc.

We invite you to play them while you are there, send us your photo!

You will find this picture explaining about the drums on the bench, have a look!
