Greenpoint Lighthouse: This is the house of the light house keeper next to the light house Richard Lear ĺived there. The house was later taken apart and brought to the Hussey’s Cove where Bill and Sadie Hussey lived in during their married life. The house still stands and is occupied by their grandson.
Port de Grave Comes Alive with Passion and Purpose
Its rugged coastline and rolling terrain combine to make Port de Grave one of the most beautiful and engaging places in Canada. The scenic and welcoming peninsula is located on Conception Bay, no more than an hour’s drive from St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Home to European settlers since the 16th century, Port de Grave (French for Serious Harbour) shares the peninsula with Green Point Lighthouse which offers photographic opportunities that rival the most striking nautical paintings.
“Port de Grave is my home community,” said Ms Iris Petten, the Chair of the Master Plan Development Committee and Fundraising Events for the Port De Grave Peninsula Heritage Society. “In partnership with various funding agencies we are working to develop the area into a key destination for travellers while ensuring the sustainability of this incredible resource.”
Ms. Petten is also known as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Petten, a role that she fills with great integrity and enthusiasm. The tradition of appointing prominent and influential Canadians as Honoraries to military units has been common practice for over a century and no one could be a better representative of 37 Combat Engineer Regiment or wear the uniform with more pride.
37 Combat Engineer Regiment is an Army Reserve unit with garrisons located in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador as well as in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In association with their esteemed Honorary, the Regiment has worked tirelessly on the location, constructing viewing platforms and developing walking trails leading down to the Green Point Lighthouse, a historic landmark in its own right.
“We are very proud to be working with Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Petten to assist her group in the development of this remarkable place,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Shane MacNeil, the Commanding Officer of 37 Combat Engineer Regiment. “And the soldiers are thrilled to be part of a project where they get to apply the skills they have learned in a way that will have a lasting presence in one of their province’s communities…this is at the very heart of why people join the Reserves.”
